Anyone have any thought or comments on Classical Hack?

Based on the info on the company web page, it seems to have an interesting philosophy which focuses more on simulation and historical scenarios. Compared to most current systems which seems to focus on allowing for either side being evenly matched.

They're my preferred ancients ruleset.

I can't put my finger on why they play out better. It may be their focus on historical scenarios versus tournament play which matches my preference for scenario play.

They are very well thought out and historical tactics in game play are rewarded in my experience.

They are not a bad set of rules but are not very clearly written. Or at least they weren't in the version I played several years ago. My group needed a lot of house rules to make them playable. Have moved on to Field of Glory and am quite satisfied.

I like them. But I have to say I only have played them with Phil Viverito, so the games flowed very well and the terrain is always awesome.
The rules are not hard to learn, after a few turns you can pretty muchplay. They are not tournament like at all.

I have played and supported Classical Hack for over 10 years or so. I run numerous convention games with the system. I find it plays well and give the gamer a feel for the periods without too much "gaming" of the system. It work fine and fits the build for what I am trying to do with my ancient games. See the yahoo group for more on the game.

I like Classical Hack, mostly because I agree with the design philosophy which encourages personal research and experimentation with the rules. I agree with the comments that they are not for tournament play.

How long does an average game take to play?

vojvoda18 Mar 2009 5:26 a.m. PST

Depending on the Scenario we finish most games in 3 to 4 hours.

Are you limited to the scenarios presented in the books, or does it play well to other scenarios, like if I wanted to run a scenario bases on the tabletop teasers from Battle games.

vojvoda18 Mar 2009 7:29 a.m. PST

No you can build scenarios on your own and there are some scenario books out there. Right now Phil and I are talking about doing Thaspus this year or next. We have the OOB and terrain layout now just to design the scenario so it is play ballanced as best we can.

I have all Phil's Hack rules, I like them very well, they are easy to follow, and the mechanics that make the game work are alot of fun. I had a lot of fun with Homer Hack using my city of Troy that I bought from him. As well as Tyre.
cheers,
tom

To quote Harman from South Park "you bastard!" I told Phil I was interested but he said he had already sold it to someone. Now I know it is you! I just have to figure out where you live in Texas.

I have long wanted to buy a copy. Looking at that thoroughly unintuitive website – I decided not to bother.

Why there cannot just be a simple "add to cart" button with the price next to it – I do not know.

Well, he is a publisher, and sales to distributors, which sales his product. Paypal is super easy to use. But ofcourse our society these days demands everything super easy, in this high tech world. Besides, his website is not a store. Its a website and info on the game. Im sure you would enjoy the rules if you had a copy. Cheers.

Diocletian,
They are terrific rules. Try them. You can get them from On Military Matters. Dennis is easy to deal with and sells from his website: onmilitarymatters.com/pages

Yes, we sell the Hack series rules at the shop. Go to the website, type in

hack

in the search field (make sure "Keywords" is showing) and click the "Search" button. The line of Hack products will appear at the top of the list (each one with an "Add to Cart" link…super easy :)
