Scale
Models (figures)
One model infantry figure represents 50 actual men. One model cavalry figure represents 40 actual troopers. One cannon model represents two actual guns. Two gunner or crew figures represent enough personnel to serve one actual gun; therefore a fully-crewed gun model would have 4 gunner models.
Distance Scale
One inch on the game table represents 40 actual paces (about 100 feet), taking an average of the many shifting definitions of a “pace” as two and one-half feet.
Turn Length
A turn in the game represents more or less 15 minutes of real time: a lot of “hurry up and wait” mixed with bursts of intense activity.

Rules for Tabletop Wargames Set in the Tricorn Era Using 15mm Size Model Soldiers

Old Dessauer 15mm: 18th Century Wargame Rules

2010 edition

An alternate edition dated 2010 is archived here (2-page PDF).

I have recently been on a simplification crusade, and here is the result. Each of these sets is two pages long and has the same turn sequence and basic mechanics. The troop scales and details however emphasize what I believe are the important differences between the periods they represent. I based the combat mechanics loosely on the WRG 1685-1845 rules: You add up combat points for units in melee and the chance to hit the enemy depends on whether you have more, the same, or fewer points.

Old Dessauer 25mm V2

2010 edition

Another alternate edition dated 2010 is archived here (4-page PDF).

This is a 25mm version of Old Dessauer… The Old Dessauer 25mm rules have more detailed game mechanics than the 15mm version. I intend them for games with larger units but smaller forces. They feature variable retreat moves, rout, and pursuit, for example.
