These wargaming rules are concerned with the fighting that took place between British and German forces in Belgium during the few weeks of late August and early September 1914. Unlike the static trench warfare that followed, this period was characterised by movement then skirmish or battle as the much smaller British Expeditionary Force, which was intent on consolidation, made repeated tactical withdrawals so as not to be overwhelmed by the advance of the Imperial German Army (the Deutsches Heer).
The war was conducted on an industrial and global scale but these rules have as their focus the smallest infantry units, the British Platoon with its Section and the German Zug with its Korporalschaft.
The game is played using 28mm miniatures to represent these individual British and German soldiers who during the war had the nicknames ‘Tommy’ and ‘Fritz’.
