Linear Tactics

Covers Mid-Eighteenth Century, European conflicts. Designed to give the right feel for the period without complex rules. The 1:50 figure-to-man ratio results in approximately 12 figures per battalion. The game uses a move/counter-move system, with cavalry able to react to certain situations during the opponent's move (including exploitation of breakthroughs). Each unit's fighting ability is based on its combat effectiveness (CE), which is related to its training, morale, and strength. The system simulates the ability of disciplined infantry to fight against larger numbers of inferior quality troops.

Units are given written orders at start of play, but must remain within command control radius of a leader to perform offensive actions. Units in proper formation and out of action can qualify for a second movement phase. Target priority rules limit who can fire upon whom. Generals are rated as either rash, bold, or cautious. Rules includes a point system for setting up balanced scenarios. Data tables cover Prussians, French, English, Austrians, Russians, and four minor states (Hanover, Hesse-Kassel, Brunswick, and Bavaria).
