These rules are an attempt to accurately simulate the battles of Classical Hellas during the era of transition from the somewhat ritualised, formal combat of largely amateur citizen armies to the battles of full-time professional soldiers and mercenaries. In terms of scope, The Captain feels that these rules can comfortably be used for any engagement up to approximately 10,000 men a side. The larger battles of this era, such as Cunaxa, The Nemea, and those arising from the campaigns of Dionysius I of Syracuse, probably fall outside the parameters of these systems. They were primarily designed to recreate the relatively minor (approx. 1000 to 5000 Hoplites a side) though plentiful encounters and expeditions of the Classical Age.
