We have one of his smaller tramps, and love it – but the Venture is awesome. Good job with the photos and those miniatures, Chick.

An ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL ship and project, Chick!

I immediately recognize the figure on the stern. It's "The Unpleasant Mr. M" from Pulp Miniatures. By the way, is that a cigarette he's got in his hand? If you made that modification, you get double extra points for that!

Fantastic job, Chick!

thumbs up

Seriously fine work there! I have a small freighter from Houston ships, but yours is the best I've seen! I hope we can see the plans someday.

Impressive.

"The cook just found a native necklace on deck! Break out the Thompsons!"

Beautiful, just beautiful.

A fine disreputable crew for a fine disrputable ship.

Nycjadie, good eye on the incised rivet marks. I was taken aback when I realized that Richard had actually marked each rivet in 3D.

Saginaw, rather than PulpFigures' "Mr. M", I believe the guy on the stern is Bill Armintrout, the Editor, having a smoke. The original casting holds a big fat reefer, which I cut down to a very-nearly-scale cigarette.

Jpattern2, those deep ones are a mixed bag, been adding to them for ten years. Grenadier, Rafm, Metal Magic, Partha troglodytes, and half a dozen other sources. The Deep one Dagon Priests in blue/green robes are conversions. Twice when I had those on the table, someone informed me that I had committed a serious heresy against GW figure collectors. I grafted Grenadier feet, hands, and heads onto very early Ringwraith bodies, and scratchbuilt the gold tiara. Apparently those Ringwraith models are so rare and valuable that my informants were turning green around the gills seeing them used as mere chopshop fodder. As a result I like my Dagon priests even more.

Thanks for the comments, and yes, Richard Houston outdid himself. He's a true craftsman, and the Venture may be his best work ever. Glad I got him to sign the bottom of the model.

Amazing model. Extra points for displacing S. Jackson from the front page, too!

shelldrake07 May 2008 7:07 p.m. PST

Absolutely lovely – how much will a ship like that cost?

twfigurines08 May 2008 1:41 a.m. PST

Fantastic model!

Shelldrake, I'd rather not spill the cost, in case Richard has restructured his pricing system in the interim.
My custom model Venture was not cheap, but I think it was EXCELLENT value.

Contact the Virtual Armchair General with your sketches and desires. You may be surprised at how affordable the price of a custom Richard Houston model turns out to be.
