Lovely picture Mal, but if I could offer a minor criticism on the accuracy (which i know from previous discussions you are keen to have) – there's way too many aircraft on the deck. Akagi's decks were practically empty at the time she was hit.

Weren't they changing payloads on the planes when she was hit?

I believe so, Bill. Don't readily know which carrier was rearming their planes, but the end result was spectacular, to say the least.

Great work, Mal! Thank you for sharing with us.

thumbs up

Maybe this is splitting hairs, but according to "Shattered Sword," only three bombs were aimed at Akagi, with one hit and one very near miss. I see evidence of at least one hit, six splashes, and a bomb in the air. Is Parshall & Tully's account in error here?

Nevertheless, it's a fine painting.

Rattlehead15 Oct 2008 8:54 a.m. PST

Beautiful as always Mal!

"Weren't they changing payloads on the planes when she was hit?"

They were, but in the hangar rather than ther flight deck. Parshall and Tulley's most excellent book goes into this (and the finer point of Japanese aircrat handling) in some detail.

A colorful representation of one of the decisive moments in modern history.

Tom Bryant15 Oct 2008 10:23 p.m. PST

Well Done Mal! That is one that would make a great wall print. Do you plan on producing any print of this?

OK…OK….. I did use a bit of artistic licence. But I had to put several aircraft on deck….I'm not a skinflint!

No prints Tom..The original work was sold to Smokey.

Cardinal Hawkwood19 Dec 2008 8:08 p.m. PST

I am a bit sick of this picture..can we have a new one?

Terry L05 Jan 2009 8:04 a.m. PST

Is it my eyes or is the perspective a bit out of whack? The carrier looks like a top down view yet the shell guysers are seen from a different angle. Mal I don't want to be super critical here but since your painting is on a public forum it is open to discussion.

Phillipaj19 Jan 2009 6:40 p.m. PST

Time for a new picture surely?

shiroyama203 Apr 2009 1:34 p.m. PST

It is no use, the painting is now so burned into my retina that even if they took it off tonight I'd still be seeing it when I logged on a month from now….:-(

Maybe that's it!!!!!
Maybe it's gone and were just seeing the after image….

clonecommander05 Apr 2009 8:41 a.m. PST

Ok…I burned the pic on disk took it to OfficeMax, had them print larger, glossy copies and I have been selling them at the local flea market to folks who like the picture. Now that I've done some damage, can you take the picture down?
