SCULPTING THE HYDRA

An sculptor's diary
by Pete Flannery

DAY 8

I began this morning with the depressing job of taking off the left forearm that I had started yesterday, but had been unable to get right. Then I was able to build it back up to match the arm that I was satisfied with.

While this was setting, I began to play around with poses for the upper torsos. I used an old wire frame to experiment with different arm positions and quickly came to the conclusion that the three upper torsos, with their weird spiky weapons, were going to be a total pain in the backside! Fortunately I was able to put that task off for a while as the forearm was set and I could begin work on the feet.

toe work

First off, I trimmed up the lower end of the arms and moulded rough underlying shapes for the two large toes of the Hydra. I then built up the claws - which helps when gauging the proportions, though I will shave these down when the putty is hard to achieve a hard-edged finished result. The Hydra has only two toes, so they need to be a bit on the hefty side. I toyed with a couple of techniques and decided to give them a ridged finish.
