SCULPTING THE HYDRA

An sculptor's diary
by Pete Flannery

DAY 14

Ok, I don't mind admitting that today was a total nightmare! I had to choose whether to work on the carapace-covered bodies or the arms first. I decided to work on the arms to set the breadth of the shoulders before adding the carapace.

working the arms

This done, I began to work on the muscles of the arms - and boy, did I have an attack of 'sculptor's block'! All sculptors have days when things don't go right and this was one of mine.

Some of the arms are folded back on themselves and trapped behind the shaft of a weapon. Not only does this make it more difficult to get your modelling tools in, but it twists the muscles into weird positions making it even more difficult to get them right. I know, I'm winging again, but hey this is like my sculpting diary so I'm just venting my frustration.

My first two attempts were disastrous and I ended up pulling the putty off. My third attempt was successful and I struggled on with the rest. I cursed this model for having six arms (eight, if you count those on the main torso!).

more arm work

When you come across a problem like this, the only thing to do is to keep on sculpting. Like any kind of artistic pastime, tensing up and getting angry only makes it more difficult. You just have to keep your cool and keep working at the model until it comes right. Not an easy task when you've got a deadline looming and a colleague looking over your shoulder with video camera in hand!!

under the camera's glare

Anyway, the arms are almost done, so praise the Lord.

end of day 14

Editor's Note: Sharp-eyed readers will have noticed from the photos that Pete has also separated the last remaining head from the Hydra body...
