sargonII, traveling in the Middle East, writes:

Israelis

37 refugees, 55-60 men, 30-man Palmach platoon. Women in the large shelters. (The children had been evacuated the day before.)

Minefields, fenced in with chickenwire, and with posted signs to warn people of their presence.

Polish rifle, Mauser

The Kibbutz had 12 old Italian rifles issued by the British (not too highly thought of). 25 rifles of varying origin (Polish, Czech, German Mausers, British). 1 tommy gun, 1 German Schmeiser, 2 Sten guns. 1 German Spandau with very little ammunition. 1 U.S. Browning machinegun. 1 Piat with 3 shells. Two 2" mortars, with 50 shells. 400 hand grenades.

The Palmach Platoon had their own rifles, and 2 Bren guns.

The coordination between the Palmach and the Kibbutz was excellent. Morale seems to have been from excellent to poor, depending upon the individual.
