Before any casting can be done, there has to be a mold. And before a mold can be made, there must be a master figure, the original from which all else will be copies. The masters are often sculpted out of a material commonly known as "green stuff."
(In the example above, the master consists of green stuff added to an existing miniature to create a new figure. It is not unusual for a sculptor to use an existing miniatures, or an armature of metal, as the basis for a new figure.)
