As play began, all plans fell apart. My fellow strike force commander, whose character sheet said "impulsive," decided to bolt away from the fight toward the far corner of the playing field. Both battleship commanders advanced toward the Terran Fleet, keeping their altitude high. Seeing a Terran destroyer scooting along low beneath the asteroid base, my ships zoomed up to medium altitude trying to block him from getting a shot off, and loosed half our missiles at him. One of our battleships suffered a misfire, shooting a friendly frigate instead...which caused the frigate to change course and briefly chase the battleship.

On the second turn, it became clear that my fighters didn't have the speed to reach the asteroid base in time to receive cover, so I headed them away from the fight (and fired their remaining missiles at the Terran destroyer). My frigate, meanwhile, danced around the end of the big asteroid and launched missiles at a Terran frigate.

A lot of missiles detonated on the second turn, both the missiles from the first turn now reaching their destinations, and the missiles from the second turn fired at much closer range. My salvos against the destroyer failed to inflict significant damage, but a lone anti-radiation missile scored a lucky critical hit on a frigate and knocked his sensors out (effectively blinding him).

The asteroids were also moving during all of this, and an enemy frigate crept to "our" side of the main asteroid only to collide with a smaller asteroid. Surviving the impact, he opened fire on my frigate (blasting it in its unshielded rear arc), knocking me down to a single hull point. I returned fire with my guns, doing no memorable damage.

The battleships now unleashed their nuclear weapons, plasma bolts, and gunfire at one another. By concentrating their fire, the Terrans blew away the largest battleship on our side. Things were looking grim.

Heavily damaged ships are marked with cotton "smoke."

Taking advantage of my maneuverability, I was able to keep my frigate at full speed and still creep in next to the asteroid base so that my vulnerable rear arc was protected. Unfortunately, this failed to save me when the Terrain main battleship opened fire, blowing through my shields easily. [kaboom!]
