SCULPTING THE HYDRA

An sculptor's diary
by Pete Flannery

DAY 6

Pete Flannery at work

Today I completed all but the end of the tail. Bending the underlying wire back into position, I added flesh to the rest of the tail and continued the sweep of it so that it curled back over itself. Where the coils of the tail met, I smoothed the join so that there would be no undercuts when the model is cast. Adding the surface texture to the tail needed to be done quite quickly, because I was working with a large amount of putty and I didn't want to set halfway through the job.

detailing the tail

I left the tip of the tail unfinished, because this will be cast in metal to give the tail a dynamic (not to mention dangerous) flick, finished as it is with a wicked axe-like blade. While the tail was drying in the oven, I cut out the rough shape for the tail-blade, which I will carve in the same way as I did the weapons.

My final task of the day was to bring the shoulders up to their full 'muscliness' and add the corded texture that will give the muscles detail when painted and drybrushed.

Later, to add a sharp contrast to the tail, I will inset a blade-like spine of coraline down the length of the tail. This will provide a contrast in texture, and also provide additional interest when painting the model.
