One of those groups which Eric speaks of is Games University, which is headed by Larry York. At Gen Con, Games U - as it's called - has brought its Games Library, which allows unlimited rental of 200+ board and RPG games for $3 USD. Some of the games available are Twilight 2000, Air Assault on Crete, Risk, Clue, Antietam, and the older version of Axis and Allies. "Normally, we bring it out for our Games University events," Larry states, "but recently we've brought it to other events such as Orccon, and it'll be at Kids Game Day in Long Beach, as well as at LosCon."
At the Games U events, the library is supplemented by loans from the members. The purpose of these events is to demonstrate a variety of games. It's billed as "your friendly neighborhood game convention." Attendees earn "class credits" for these demos, which can be cashed in at the end for "graduation" items.
Larry notes that the library itself has grown through the gracious support of game companies who've donated product. "Days of Wonder Games has been a very good supporter of our endeavors," he says. "Our mission is to maintain and grow the hobby by introducing games to more people."
Their next events are Fullerton, CA, with March 30 thru April 1, and November 9 thru 11, 2007. They are both expected to have a Paint and Take (courtesy of Reaper, Testors and Adiken). Larry invites interested gamers to check out their website: gamesucon.com. He also apologizes for the site's ongoing technical difficulties which have prevented it from being updated, but says that those issues should be resolved shortly.
