SCULPTING THE HYDRA

An sculptor's diary
by Pete Flannery

DAY 7

Having worked on the shoulders yesterday, I could now gauge the overall bulk of the Hydra's lower torso. Before I could continue work on the arms, I needed to finish the chest and back. If I were to finish the arms first, then it would be more difficult to get at the torso, and it would mean trying to squeeze the shapes between the arms rather than sculpting the arms against the finished body.

working on the musculature

It is quite tricky to get the muscles on this creature to look right. In many ways they resemble those of a human, but the anatomy of the Hydra is nothing like that of a human, so the muscles must seem right to the eye even if they are not anatomically correct. This is achieved by combining recognisable shapes with more alien-looking areas so that the whole looks convincing.

musculature details

Mixing small amounts of putty, I work on one area at a time. First the ribcage and the muscles alongside it. Then the broad muscles of the back, which I blended in with the texture on the snake-body. With this done, I could continue with the arms, bulking up the biceps and triceps. With this being cast as one resin piece, the arms need to be somewhat thicker than they might otherwise be. Getting this right caused me some grief, and I will need to redo the left forearm tomorrow.

blade of the tail, in progress

As ever, while the putty was hardening in the oven, I worked on other parts of the model - and today it was the axe-like blade of the tail which is now ready to be attached.
