SCULPTING THE HYDRA

An sculptor's diary
by Pete Flannery

DAY 4

working on the torso

Day four saw the Hydra starting to take shape. In order to get a feel for the pose and the proportions of the body, I added the rough shape for the chest, back and shoulders. Over these rough shapes I will add a further layer of putty, almost as if I were applying skin over the creature's muscles. You can see how just a few pieces of putty suddenly transform the wire armature into the recognisable form of a torso. There is no need to be too accurate at this point, as these areas can be shaved down or built up when I'm working on the final layer.

I use a small oven to speed up the hardening process of the putty. The oven is set to a low temperature so that the putty doesn't distort or form any bubbles, but the heat means that the putty hardens in about 10-15 minutes.

While the different areas of putty were drying, I continued work on the weapons. With all the blades finished, I attached them to the handles using super glue, strengthening the joint with a little milliput.
