Meanwhile, rival cavalry prepare to clash on the Austrian left, while the guns of the redoubt (top left) keep up a sharp fire on the approaching French (bottom of picture). Puffs of cotton mark where smoke from firing obscures the battlefield. The Austrian cavalry is using a template to determine its fire strength.
