Trench

The assault on Ammunition Hill was conducted by the Paratroopers Brigade under the command of Mordechai Gur. This brigade had originally been assigned to drop in the Sinai. However, reinforcing Jerusalem, and the desire to go on the offensive in Jerusalem, was seen as more important. The brigade took mobilized civilian buses to Jerusalem, and prepared to begin the assault in the early morning. West (Jewish) Jerusalem at this time was being shelled heavily by the Jordanians.
