Herod's Gate, from the west

Herod's Gate is on the north side of the wall, and is under a kilometer from Damascus gate.

The gate is on a higher elevation than Damascus Gate, and therefore is on more defensible ground. Inside the gate, the western side slopes up, and the eastern side slopes gradually down. The gate is currently a straight-through passage (the original entrance faced east).
