Some time ago, you may remember that I showed off a dollar store ceramic eagle, which I rebased for Mighty Armies.
I suppose it needs rules, too…
Rules for Flying Eagles
The really good news is that rules for flying eagles can be found in the supplement, Death From Above, which is a free download from Wargame Vault.
Turn to page five for the Great Eagle stats.
The supplement provides complete rules for flying creatures in Mighty Armies, including air-to-air combat, air-to-ground combat, and breath weapons (not needed for Giant Eagles, I would think!).
But Wait!
The only problem is that the rules in the supplement are for a Great Eagle, which apparently is not as large as my Giant Eagle (which is on a monstrous base, after all). And the one in the rules has a Scream Attack that sounds cool, but I want one more like the eagles in The Hobbit.
So let's redesign the eagle. Let's make it a Monstrous unit, and give it Flyer (+2 points)… oh, and one more thing…
Why is the Giant Eagle behind the Dwarf unit? No, it is not supporting them in combat (though it could!). Inspired by The Hobbit, it wants to pick up the unit and move it somewhere else on the battlefield!
So we need a new ability:
Transport (1 point)
A unit with this ability may 'pick up' any unit which begins the movement phase in front of it, and 'put down' the unit immediately in front of itself at the end of movement. May not transport monsters, mounted units, or other flying units. At the end of a transport move, the flying unit is considered 'landed' and may be attacked by any land-based unit in contact until its next move.
Adding that all up, here's what we end up with:
Unit Type | Cost | Move | Fight, Support | Abilities |
---|---|---|---|---|
Giant Eagle | 8 points | 9 inches | 5,2 | Flyer, Transport |
And that's a Hobbit-inspired Giant Eagle for Mighty Armies.
