SCULPTING THE HYDRA

An sculptor's diary
by Pete Flannery

DAY 3

Today I worked on a number of different jobs, though they might not be immediately obvious from the photographs.

bulking up the tail

I bulked up the tail and torso of the hydra some more. This will now give me a firm foundation for applying the final layers.

I continued to carve the weapons from pieces of milliput. This is one of those jobs where the phrase "more haste less speed" really applies. The weapons are key elements to the model ,and it is worth spending the time to make sure they are really cool. They need to be sharply defined and well proportioned. I decided to 'oversize' the Hydra's weapons slightly because it is a large model and I didn't want them to get lost. They need to look dangerous and impressive.

Starting from a rough shape cut out from milliput, I use a scalpel to shave down the blades until they attain the correct outline. Then I chamfer the cutting edge of the blade and file into it to give it the distinctive Koralon jagged edge. I have also twisted some copper wire to form the handles of the weapons.
