Another game was a memorial game of Zombies!!! The game was held in honor of Brian Young - who passed on May 25 of an aortic rupture at the age of 34. A year ago at GenCon 2004, there was an impromptu game of Zombies!!! fueled by Pixy-Stix and Mountain Dew. The four-player game lasted four hours, with Brian finally winning.

At the time of his death, his friends Robin, Pyrogal, and Dearcy decided to hold a similar game at GenCon 2005 to honor him. They contacted Twilight Creations, the maker of Zombies!!!, to ask if it would be OK. Their reply was to donate prizes to support the game.

The game was originally planned for Thursday evening, but that ran into trouble when GenCon dropped that day for scheduled events. The game was moved to Friday, which conflicted with a scheduled game by Twilight Creations - which promptly cancelled their event in support. The prizes for the evening were two signed copies of MidEvil, each with a different piece of original art inside the cover.

The game, complete with Pixy-Stix and Mountain Dew, got started with two groups of five players. In Zombies!!!, the object of the game is to be the first to make it to the helipad or to kill 25 zombies. City-street tiles are drawn from a deck and placed to build a map, with the number of zombies being determined by the number of street points or by the numbers written on the tile. During game play, there are various cards which can help you or be used upon other players - usually to your benefit. Also, players take turns moving some of the zombies as well - usually not to the benefit of another player.

A leisurely stroll down the street - so far...

As the game progressed, the body count on both sides increased as tiles containing zombie-filled buildings were added. Since the buildings also contained extra lives and bullets, players were compelled to enter them. Carnage usually ensued.

Finally! The helipad!

Both games progressed with the all-important helipad being drawn in the last five tiles. However, the other game had created a long boulevard filled with zombies between the town square and the helipad - the dreaded zombie conga-line...

There's a lot of zombies between us and escape...
