Pretty much all Sutcliff is superb. But there are days I think Davidson pretty well nailed late Rome in his "Peregrine" books. I'd swap them for more Davidson short stories, of course. The man should have been stamped "Work in excess or 50 pages strictly prohibited."

Davidson was notorious for starting "trilogies" and then wandering off after the second book.
Peregrine Secundus was also quite good. Alas, no third book.
And RP is correct about how it nails the Late Roman era.
