None? Ghost stories aren't scary unless you're under 12. |

Need a "none" or "this is ridiculus" option. |

The Raven King cycle by Maggie Stiefvater, beginning with The Raven Boys, are among the best modern fantasy/suspense/mystery novels I have ever read. At first you're reading thinking "her characterizations are excellent, but I know where she's going with this." You're right about the former. You're dead wrong about the latter. Because right in the middle of the story, with one line— "I told you,"—everything gets turned on its head, and from there on out the twists just keep happening. And they're all terrific. By the end of the whole thing, you're pondering what is meant by "time" and "past" and "future," not to mention "cause and effect." And in the middle of it all she has the best family of psychics you'll ever meet, a hit man with a penchant for Old English poetry, night terrors made real, and the mystic promise of a dead Welsh king… Fabulous. Scary? I dunno. Depends on what scares you. But terrific? Absolutely. |

The Lost Stradivarius : J. Meade Falkner. I must have missed the pre-poll discussion Who suggested The Turn of the Screw? The only fear that induced was whether I'd actually die of boredom before I got to the end or not. I'm happy to be able to tell you that I survived…..or did I? |
