You know, if I only had one period and scale, it would be easier to give a single answer.

Fortunately I generally play on someone else's terrain which is on the 8-9 scale.

For old school standards its up there, but compared to most its not great.

Better than circles and squares of felt, unless you count the big green felt cloth underneath. But that's just because my terrain pieces are manufactured, not created by me. And it depends on the game, too.

I agree that this question really needed to be more specific.

There is the whole form-follows-function and form-vs-function continuum. And the idea of the referent … is cartoony terrain good for a 4 colour superhero game? Then there's storage and setup – I have a "4" or "5" missile tower that stands almost 3' tall that becomes a "9" or "10" when you consider that it folds up to store flat in less volume than a standard scrapbook. And specificity vs reuse, so if I skip signs with words, I can use a building in many more milieu.

And that's just a start…

If figure mine has to be tolerably good, because when I played a tournament where there was a rule that the umpire could remove any terrain piece he deemed insufficiently pretty, people lined up to borrow from me!

It's OK – I just don't have enough of it (especially trees) although I have just finished a couple of medieval cottages that I think are pretty good

"And specificity vs reuse, so if I skip signs with words, I can use a building in many more milieu."

Good point etotheipi. My 1/72 set is picked to work over a broad span. It's only in microscale that I have enough buildings to do period graffiti on the walls.

And Inn signs with pictures rather than words!
