Complex question with too simplistic a selection of answers. Had I been raised prior to the Civil War, rather than now, I suspect that my values, interpretation of the constitution, and perspective of the role of the federal government vs. state's rights might be somewhat different.

Additionally, am I the president from South Carolina, or the one from New York? Again, my view and actions might be different.

If it was me as I am now, I suspect that I would have tried to follow a different path that would have avoided shots on Fort Sumter, while getting Sheridan, Sherman and Grant into position before the inevitable war started. In the end, I would have been assassinated much earlier, as issues/agenda like radical changes in child welfare, focused advance of education, development of medicine, cooperation with native Americans, equality for woman/native Americans/Africans/all other minorities, and the elimination of slavery wouldn't have made me very popular.

Agreed!

The US government had been pandering to the slave-owning stats for way too long – it was time that enough was enough

Easy answer. You would be very hard pressed to do better than Lincoln. Fight it out. That is what he did. It turned out well…eventually.
