I've voted chess & tennis set (although I don't play tennis).

My modelling skills aren't up to the moving diorama style of game, and (luckily for me) I like the look of a more basic terrain – it appeals to me. Just as well really otherwise I'd be really frustrated with my setups wink

I'm presently designing ships for a Space1889 campaign, looking at GURPS books, deciding which Europa board game to fiddle with and reading Osprey books on Scribd.

So none of the above, I guess.

I ticked history buff as, for me, without the history there is no wargame.

Of course, like everyone, the truth is in the mix. The history makes the game worth playing, but collecting and painting the figures turns it into a relaxing passtime … and then playing the games gives an opportunity to share that enthusiasm with friends and explore the possibilities of the history.

It is really the combination of all three – the background in real events, the craft and collecting and the game play with friends – that makes wargaming compelling …

… and that's the kind of wargamer I am wink

I think it is the way traditional wargaming combines several rewarding leisure activities in one endeavour that explains why I haven't had one of these slumps of interest I often read about in the 45 years since I discovered Charge! as a youngster.

That doesn't mean that my way is better in any sense – just it defines my type of wargamer and captures why, after all this time, I'm still doing it, still enthusiastic and still finding it fresh …

I like the whole hobby.

"without the history there is no wargame"

Unless you're doing sci-fi, fantasy, or imagi-nations.

I am a history buff but that is not my main motivation for playing. I don't particularly care for the modeling part (I hate painting figures!). What I like about the hobby is playing interesting games so I chose "cess and tennis"

All of the above, but that is not one of the options.

I did "none of the above" because any one of the above doesn't cut it.

"Both" really need a mix of all of the above.

Like history and love gaming, but I love painting best – so I guess I am kind of the model railroader type but really a mix of all three

No, no … what I put was 'for me without the history there is no wargame' … if for you definitions extend to sci-fi and fantasy, then that's fine (your interests/your way as they might say these days) …

imagi-nations of course are mostly a respinning of the old 'semi historical' toy soldiering (and in their traditional form they are entirely dependent upon actual military figures and costume … just with fictional back stories and occasional flights of fancy): I don't think you can bracket imaginations with sci-fi and fantasy (well, I wouldn't … but as above, everyone can configure their interests their way) …

I think the bit I like the best is presenting toy soldier reconstructions to the public at heritage and wargame events … (so I guess that validates my tick as history buff wink)

I would vote, but there are no choices for what I like about the hobby. I enjoy painting and research of the uniforms. I enjoy the history of the periods I'm researching. I enjoy researching and writing our own home grown rules for each period I game in. I enjoy making the lists of regiments, etc. for my armies. I enjoy developing all the scenery and terrain for the period. And, of course, to cap it all off, I enjoy gaming the period. And the bonus is being with a bunch of friends who really enjoy playing and relaxing, who do not take everything to seriously.

This is a very poor poll. I would select at least two, and possibly three, of those categories and some that are not listed.

I'm a mix of model railroad and chess. I like ot paint and present nice figures and tables, but I also like to play games.

Cadian 7th19 Aug 2014 5:47 p.m. PST

I agree with most of the others. I game to have fun, but the table and mini building and painting are a lot of fun too. I used to game with unpainted troops, but now they will not be gamed with unless I have them properly finished for battle.

All of the above!

Covert Walrus20 Aug 2014 10:37 p.m. PST

I love the rules and playing the games, but I take pride in doing the best I can painting and in some cases making the minis too.

Didn't we already do this poll? Am I thinking about the suggestion topic? Wow, that seemed like a long time ago.

Gratifying to see "History Buff" getting the most votes.
