Sometimes I find there is a great deal of difference between "a topic people should know about" and "a specific book on that topic people should read."

Given that, I felt quite comfortable deviating from the expected on this list. I mean, yeah, you should know about the Peloponnesian War, but you don't have to have read Kagan's book on it. But the only way to really know about Doc Savage is to read Man of Bronze, so obviously I had to pick the latter over the former. evil grin

I've read "On War" by Clausewitz many many moons ago. It has a few good one liners. Other than that, it's not a good read and overrated. There I said it.

I tried to read The Name of the Rose way back when I was on my Prieure de Sion kick.
I must have missed all the clues and found it excruciatingly boring.

Again 11 great books make my longlist, and 9 essential reads made my shortlist…

Picking certain books over other ones… a real challenge!

I wish we had them split into Factual and Fiction sub categories… I would have been happy trying to pick fifteen of each (or so) out of a full listing…

There are tons of good books on the list but there isn't even one that I think EVERYONE should read.

I agree with nazrat.

I agree except for the Reardon book. It really is an interesting study in the concept of memory and historical record, it is good for the historian but it is also good for the average person because it really shows good, relateable examples of how your memory basically is terrible.

Those are so disparate that it's hard to pick something.

In the end, I guess you can't go wrong with Vonnegut though.
