It still pins any non tank unit that takes a hit, even if they save.
Smoke is almost automatic.
It can kill heavy tanks.
What's not to like. The odds of not actually doing anything?
The good outweighs the bad. You pay the points and you take the chance.

It's like asking if I should take Air or Anti Air. Of course.

I a fully aware that I am a lowly company commander and my fairy godmother is Corps Quartermaster.

No longer play FoW, but my Red Menace infantry always had artillery and mortars and regimental guns and MG company and so on…

Haven't played FoW in ages, but my American infantry company always took all the artillery it could.

I always take mortars and arty.

When I've played it, it's usually pre-set, historical scenarios, and not competition games, so there's almost always artillery.

Of course, whether it can be called in when desired, and on target is another matter.
