An army for a period I and others were playing at the moment; a small army (but playable) so as not to put them off with the scale of the enterprise. So maybe a DBA army or a WW2 platoon+ for Chain of Command or Bolt Action. They could then expand the force or get an opposition force.

No top five pick list?

I would and I have given away Napoleonic units. Potentially, I would give away colonials or WWII to encourage a newer player.

It really depends on the person – I would agree with a top five list.

I would maybe start with Old West, but Napoleonic, Ancients, Colonial or WW2 would be up there depending on the person involved and their interests.

I agree with the "top five" concept here.

19th Century. It is the real transition from close quarter melee being effective to stand-off targeting dominating the battlefield. I feel this transition period gives some of the most tactically rich situations. That dynamic exists in other genres of wargame, but it is really part and parcel of most 19th Century battles.

Other: I would only give them an army in the period, and genre, they affirmed to me they would be interested in playing, and receiving. I could give them an army of my choice, but it may end up in the trash, as it was not their choice. No different than pushing my political views on them -- likely to drive them away. Cheers!

Some period they are interested in.

Something manageable that's being played locally.

Around here, that would be DBA, Bolt Action, or Ogre for a good 'here kid, the first one's free'.

My people lean toward matched horse & musket armies--colorful, and furthest from GW. But there have been exceptions.

But span of time: when I started, I was given one free figure and the best wishes of the group. Everything else was earned by painting or paid for in cash.
