Clive Merrison (radio) and Ronald Howard (TV).

Ronald Howard was an excellent Holmes. Certainly far superior to some that made the list. Downey is a joke!

Brett looked like and embodied Holmes better than any of the others though I shall always have a soft spot for Rathbone as the Holmes of my youth.

Basil Rathbone

Rathbone was a great Holmes when you gave him good material. Radio Holmes with Rathbone and a script based on a Conan Doyle story is as good as you get. Sadly, the Rathbone/Bruce radio "Hound of the Baskervilles" is lost. My mother remembered listening to it.

But that's not to say anything against Brett.

Rathbone is the iconic Holmes, but Jeremy Brett seemed the closest to Doyle's version in the books.

I also liked the Dr. Watson in the Brett series compared to the buffoon played by Nigel Bruce.

+0.75 Der Alte Fritz – I have a soft spot for Nigel Bruce, yes he's a terrible buffoon but Holmes is very fond of him you know. Which does make him sound a bit like a puppy, but even so.

Basil Rathbone is my favorite, and i always liked Nigel Bruce, even though he causes so much trouble.

Jeremy Brett is a better Holmes, but i still like Basil

While Nigel "Willie" Bruce played Watson as a decidedly fumbling, muttering fool, he was at least given one time to top Holmes.

In the film "Spider Woman" (certainly one of the best of the Rathbone's), it's Watson that recognizes a skeleton as a Pygmy which Holmes took to be a child.

Well played, Watson!

Jeremy Brett WAS Holmes. The stories were very close to those in the books. The production taken as a whole was incredibly well done. For fans of Holmes, it doesn't get any better. Of course there are other actors who gave some very good performances. But the depth of the Brett series is so superior including their portrayal of Watson that nothing else is even close.

Thanks,

John
