The RN had the best nicknames for warships:

HMS Outrageous, Curious, and Spurious for Courageous, Glorious, and Furious.

HMS Refit and Repair for Renown and Repulse (hasty modification of Revenge class caused some teething troubles).

HMS Ocupado and Vacante for Triumph and Swiftsure, from the stall handle door indicators on ships quickly purchased from Chile in 1904 (to avoid Russia picking them up).

HMS Exploder and Exruciator for Explorer and Excalibur, two hydrogen-peroxide powered subs with a history of fires and accidents.

I have read that the nicknames for the three large light cruisers were Outrageous, Spurious, and Uproarious.

Not to mention that the sailors from said vessels can acquire a nickname derived from this – for example, the "Ruffians" from "Billy Ruffian" from HMS Bellerophon

I was looking for the Thunderchild.

Glad to see HMS Glowworm here – the story of here attack on the Hipper is an outrageous mix of bravery, black humor and honour among fighting men. Personal favourite remark made about it was from a Cracked.com article, showing the infamous photo from Hipper's bridge saying "Not heard in photo; The fire alarms on Glowworm, or German sailors yelling MEIN GOTT! THEY'RE COMING BACK!"

My favourite will always be the Speedy.

Which version of the Ark Royal? Some of these names have been used since the 16th Century.

Please do not refer to a ships name as a nickname. For example the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise was nicknamed "The Big E."
