Also like the worlds of the Shannara novels, and the worlds of Lawrtence Watt-Evans' Lords of Dus (with Garth the Overman) and the ones from his "The Misenchanted Sword", "With a Single Spell" and others. |
| Gumshoe | 29 Jun 2009 2:14 a.m. PST |
And the world of the Spiral from Michael Scott Rohan's "Chase the Morning, "Gates of Noon" and "Maxie's Demon". And whilst I'm about it throw in his "Winter of the World" setting too. |

My two favorite worlds/campaigns are of my own creation (one began with white box D&D (OD&D?) and migrated to 1st Edition AD&D (with some concerns,) the other never left it's orgins original D&D.) Fiddled with Basic D&D – step backwards IMO. Adjusted a few campaign scenarios to use 2nd edition AD&D – seemed to be getting too widget oriented. I used some canned scenarios but many were too
"something"
for my campaigns. My votes for specific commercial choices listed are for the scenarios for those settings that I bought which adjusted well to my campaigns. Gracias, Glenn |

What? No Rokugan from Clan War/Legend of the Five Rings? Balderdash! |
| Ed Mohrmann | 29 Jun 2009 3:51 a.m. PST |
My sole vote is 'other,' for my own setting created about 2 years after brown box D&D (the original) appeared back in '74. |

Suprised not to see the Young Kingdoms on there – no where for Elric to play! |
| Lentulus | 29 Jun 2009 4:57 a.m. PST |
I was not going to bother voting until I saw Thieves' World – assuming I am remember the right book/supplement. I used that city as a low-tech Traveller city for a long time. And it was fine as a fantasy environment as well. |

The poll would be more exciting if it was "Favorite Fantasy World BESIDES Middle Earth". |

There is only one true fantasy setting to rule them all. |

No dying world (jack vance) ? Shocking ! |
| Hevy Phyzx | 29 Jun 2009 7:50 a.m. PST |
How about Steven Erickson's The Malazan Book of the Fallen series? I dont' recall the names of the "land" itself since it ranges over many continents. It was nice to see Hyborea listed, but I am also shocked that Young Kingdoms was not listed too. I would also add a plug for Steven Brust's setting for the Vlad Taltos series, and George R.R. Martin's Seven Kingdoms -Game of Thrones- setting as well. Andy Welkley "Your Phrendlee Hevy Phyzx T-chrr" |

I take it this is where I put my other which is Roger Zelazny's Amber x42 |

The poll would be more exciting if it was "Favorite Fantasy World BESIDES Middle Earth". Nice to see that ME is more popular than the Warhammer world and Iron Kingdoms, though

I like the Old World. I just don't want to pay $200 USD to play in it. The Young Kingdoms should definitely have been added, but I didn't take part in the discussion so I won't complain too bitterly. Conan's Hyborea is there, however, and that makes up for a lot. Did I miss seeing Lankhmar? |
| Alxbates | 29 Jun 2009 9:17 a.m. PST |
IMARO!!! Also cool to see Crocodile Games' "Antediluvean" setting and Lankhmar on the list. |
| mweaver | 29 Jun 2009 9:21 a.m. PST |
Lankhmar is there, JWOMACK94. It is one of the five I voted for. |
| Elric Of Melnibone | 29 Jun 2009 9:47 a.m. PST |
My "other" has to be The Young Kingdoms. Bummer, I missed this discussion ;-( I WANT TO PLAY

I voted for Fire & Ice because I assume that is the world from George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire books. I would also vote for Lawrence Watt-Evans world from the books "With This Single Spell" and "The Misenchanted Sword", as well as the world from Michael Reeves "The Shattered World" and "The Burning Realm". Is the Greyhawk choice the old D&D supplement or the latter nonsense that TSR started spewing out in the mid 80s like a dysentery patient along with "Thieves Handbook" and other such nonsense? -- Tim |

Invincible Overlord, I gather, is intended to mean the Wilderlands of High Fantasy world of Judges Guild. |

I thought Faerun was the name of the main continent in the Forgotten Realms? I thought so too, or that they were basically the same place. Mind you, it's been a while since I was in any way up to speed in that regard – was still playing AD&D 2nd Edition, I believe. And whilst I'm about it throw in his "Winter of the World" setting too. Always enjoyed those books. |
| svsavory | 29 Jun 2009 4:52 p.m. PST |
Middle Earth is the most popular so far. No surprise there. |
| zapper | 29 Jun 2009 5:21 p.m. PST |
I don't know. I was pretty surprised. While I enjoyed the books completely and the movies a great deal, never could see any attraction to playing in what I've always thought of as a "closed environment." Same was always true with Star Wars for me too. |
| Syrinx0 | 29 Jun 2009 6:12 p.m. PST |
Hyborea. Lankhmar and Thieves world might have been a bit more open to playing but there is a lot of time inbetween the hobbit and LOTR. Not to mention the earlier ages. It was a very rich background. Much like all the current leaders it was well written. I'm not sure I agree that Warhammer fits in that mold. I like to play the game but I would not put it in my top five. |

I voted other as well and if the Young Kingdoms or Multiverse had been on there that would have been my 1st vote. |

What's the difference between Morte d'Arthur and Pendragon? Assuming the latter is the Greg Stafford game, it is fairly closely based on Malory (though there is additional stuff from the Vulgate cycle and The History of the Kings of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth). |

Much as I enjoy Middle Earth, Lankhmar beats it every which way. (I've never heard of Lankmahr; and besides, Lankhmar is the main city, not the world-setting, which is Nehwon). I enjoy Hyborea (Howard) even more than Middle Earth. "Other" would be my own, "Seventh Aeon" setting, c. 50K years in the future (and long before WH 40K came out), after a deluge of meteorites plunged the continental masses back into a hasty "Pangea"

What about Glen Cook's Dread Empire (although I do like the Black Company more) – or Jon Abercrombie's Union/Ghurkistan/Old Empire (new, I know, but very neat – especially Logan Ninefingers, who is my idea of a complete barbarian)? Good to see Hyborea doing so well – I just re-read an anthology of Howard's original stories |

Favorite for reading? For gaming? Or what? My "other" vote goes to Zelazny's Amber (for both gaming and reading) and Judges Guild's Wilderlands (for gaming), and the city of Camorr from the Scott Lynch novels (for reading, but would make a fantastic RPG setting). |
