I voted "cat person" because that's all I have at the moment, though I have had dogs and love them as much as cats. |
Dropzonetoe | 01 Jul 2009 2:32 a.m. PST |
I tend to prefer cats. I like dogs, but only a very narrow window of them – Basset Hounds making up 90% of what I like, Have a basset, and a couple of cats |

Don't mind having dogs come to visit or stay for a few days, but in general prefer cats. Apart from the one that craps on my lawn. |

I wouldn't be surprised if gamers tend to be cat people – nerds are more likely to be cat people I would think. I have two cats and my neighbours dogs are always hanging around my front door but I wouldn't have a dog of my own. Too much work. |

"Not saying" is a great option. Should be in every poll. I like participating in polls, but I'm not always in a cooperative mood, so that option is an excellent idea. |

Cats, have two. Having been attacked by a dog when very small I've grown up keeping my distance. |

I blame the wife for this, 5 cats, 2 birds, 1 dog and some fish. |

Dogs, preferably shelter mutts. |
| mweaver | 01 Jul 2009 5:41 a.m. PST |
Like both, but if I could only cohabit with one species, it would be cats. |
| D6 Junkie | 01 Jul 2009 5:50 a.m. PST |
Five cats at the moment, they just keep showing up. Love dogs but they require more attention, a bit like kids. |

Like them both, but dogs seem to try too hard. The are the Eddy Haskells of the domesticated animal world. |

Dogs. Only needed cats on the farm, to keep the mice (and therefore the snakes which eat them) out of the barns and away from the horses. Current pet count: 1 dog, 3 fish, 1 turtle |
| JamesonFirefox | 01 Jul 2009 8:01 a.m. PST |
I like both but I prefer rabbits. Smart. Cute. If socialized properly they're quite friendly. And best of all they're quiet and they don't jump up on the counters! |

2 rescued cats -- Frankie and the everlov'n' Pumpkin (watch those claws sweetie). I had a dog as a kid, but I prefer cats now. |

I said "neither", but we (i.e. the family) have had a dog, a dumb but intensely loyal Lab-Retriever cross who did yeoman service as watchdog and child companion – I don't have much affinity to animals, which is probably a personality trait – but I hate cats If there is a housefire, your dog will burn to death trying to drag you out – while your cat sits across the laneway and hopes enough of the food survives for lunch |

Dogs. Cats are only useful for stringing tennis rackets (catgut). |

Ha- Jerzei, I guess they give you your cat at the same time they issue you your accordian
I had many cats growing up, but now I'm allergic to them
what the hell's up with that? I'd have lizards (iguanas or salvador monitors, maybe gavials if we could build them a good pond), but my wife disagrees. She keeps her octopus collection in reef environments around the world, but none of them at the house. |
| WillieB | 01 Jul 2009 11:05 a.m. PST |
Cats, definitely. When I grew up there were always at least 4 or 5 cats in the house. Almost always rescues, but this time I couldn't resist and bought one of that breed I had coveted for years, an Abyssinian. Named him Napoleon. Purely by chance he was later joined by a Maine Coon kitten, that otherwise would have died. Boru came out of a shelter and is 18 pounds of pure love. Wonderful, lovable creatures and contrary to what many people seem to think, very loyal if you treat them right. Oh, I like dogs as well, but frankly don't have enough time to give them the life they deserve. On top of that my preferred breed is the Irish Wolfhound (my aunt has three of them) but they are hardly suitable for my dwelling. So for now there's Boru, Nappy and Scully keeping me company and I'm almost sure I'll always have a few furry friends about. |

Despite my brother's insistence that I can only like one or the other, I like both. I have two cats, the dogs having passed on (sniff). I haven't replaced the canines since I'm looking to re-locate, and would rather have dogs when I'm settled in someplace than when I'm on the lam. My dogs and cats always got along famously, I never had any problems with conflicts between them. So why not both? |

cats are only good for having in a barn, and used as pig food when they breed to many kittens I cant even stand being near someone who lives with cats they smell like their cats litter boxes. its just like a smoker they cant smell the stink any more because they live with it every day. |

I thought I was a dog person from my good childhood experiences on the family farm. A single indoor pug owned by my newlywed wife cured me of the delusion. For years I threatened to introduce the pug to my imaginary friend "Lee Wong" who had on many occasions invited the pug for supper. |

I have had quite a few cats over the years, all but one of them were very nice and loveable. I've been around a lot of dogs too, of course, but only one of them did I find to be acceptable company. The others were mostly annoying. |
| Daffy Doug | 02 Jul 2009 9:25 a.m. PST |
Cats have intruded in my life far more than dogs. And I have to say that cats at least are mostly ignorable. Recently I banished my daughters' two cats to their basement shared bedroom: my life has become equable enough that I can sleep on the livingroom couch to avoid being disturbed by my wife's snoring and tossing and turning and waking up with aches and pains. If the cats were still in possession of the whole house there's no way I could sleep where they could get at me, let alone the cat fur everywhere. Dogs, now, are worse by a factor of (add weight above and beyond the typical cat, plus more hair, plus feces, plus destroyed property, plus NOISE): and I am grateful that I have owned only ONE dog in my entire life. My brother's dog while we were growing up doesn't count; neither does the puppy that lasted two weeks and got run down in the road when I was c. 5 years old. "Soup" was eventually given away to a couple employed to guard a cemetery, where he sired puppies and dragged around a cinderblock chained to his collar. I think he'll love me when I take the road to Valhalla, and guard me safely through: he gave up a devoted master (I did my duty by him), a puny yard (he kept eating his way through the pine board fence to get to the outter world) and isolation, for SEX and fighting his new owners' dogs to become the alpha male

On my walk I pass a pair of 80 ounce "wolves": they run along the inside of their chainlink fence, on the other side of a canal, "snarling" and just wanting to tear me up: in every way, other than size and bark, they behave exactly like guard dogs half a step removed from wolves. Even small tufts of grass trip them up. My usual response is silence but sometimes they annoy me enough to make me mutter, "Ah, shutup ye thrice-be-poxed pair of squeeze toys
