Read and enjoyed four of these: Lucifer's Hammer, On the Beach, Day of the Triffids and A Canticle for Liebowitz. I don't think any of these are for wargamers (as opposed to role-players) in particular, but I voted for Canticle not least because I recall it was the best book evoking the early monastic experience I have come across. |

I enjoyed Day of the Triffids which is a rarity for the genre. |

I di vote Canticle as it is I think the best one, but The Stand is probably my second as it is very readable. They are all good really. Ivan, if you liked Day of the Triffids, you should then read The Kraken Wakes, also by John Wyndham, and then move onto some of the the other 60's British New Wave "world disaster" novels like Ballard's The Drowned World and The Wind From Nowhere and John Christopher's The Death of Grass. Well, as least these are four of them I can remember the names and authors! I would loan them to you but you are a bit far away:-) |

Lucifer's Hammer suffers from being co-written by Jerry Pournelle. I have met him. He gets no votes or royalties from me. I voted for Canticle. |

I know Jerry's son, the Navy man; Great Full Thrust player and ACW player. I admire his dad's work, if not his politics. And I voted for The Postman; Small unit actions. |
