I imagine that to the crews of the Union warships in Hampton Roads in early March of 1862, the USS Monitor was the most beautiful ANYTHING they'd ever seen :)

They were all pretty darn ugly. But functional.

ACW ironclads were pretty striking but beautiful? Give me a tall ship for looks

A number of blockade runners had some beautiful lines and looked fast standing still but they would not be eligible for inclusion as the poll is limited to "fighting ships". This does not prevent the inclusion of the many captured blockade runners that were used by the US Navy to capture blockade runners and assist in general duties

So I present as a good example the USS Gettysburg

Have to disagree, some of the best looking sailing ships came out of the ACW. The Alabama, Shenandoah and Florida are fine looking ships. The Shenandoah in particular. A lovely print of her by John Ficklen graces my front foyer.
