Given the economic pressures facing China the leadership needs an external focus to divert public unhappiness and I see the South China Sea as just too easy for the Chinese government to use as a diversion to unite the greater mass of the Chinese people

So I think escalation is inevitable for the short term

Let's be honest, this is a fight between China and the USA. The Philippines and other SE Asian states are bit players in the drama.
