Since the anonymous person gives no reason for his preference--or at least none was passed to us--this makes the issue a matter of taste and not rational debate. That said, google "5mm (or 6mm) wargame images" and take a look at some of the boards. I for one would rather push a 1"x2" stand with 24 infantry figures--including officer, drummer and colors--than a colored cardboard chit with the NATO symbol for an infantry battalion printed on it, and to take or defend three-dimensional terrain rather than a stylized map. (I also find that 1x2 stand much easier to handle.) |

I think I draw the line at 6mm. For my tired old eyes, anything smaller looks pretty much like a cardboard counter anyway. |

I assume the poster is talking about gaming with infantry figures, not ships. I own and play ironclads at 1:600 scale with the wonderfully detailed Thoroughbred models. Isn't that usually equated to 3mm? Members of our group have modern warships in 1:3000 scale. I have no problem distinguishing between the models at that scale. Rick |

I generally enjoy playing boardgames (and quite a few have miniatures rather than counters), and there are some real gems out there. As for miniature gaming, I normally game with 28mm figures, and they are small enough for me. Obviously ships or flyers can be a lot smaller for me to id. After all is said and done, it depends on the game, whether it be miniatures or a boardgame. This poll seems rather ill-thought out to me. |

I play a moderate amount of 6mm, plus 1:600 ships and 1:600 aircraft as well as playing boardgames…hence the premise fails for me. |

I agree with Florida Tory – the question can't possibly apply to ships. Though the Battle of Midway in 15mm would be really cool to play (if someone else arranges for the site and provides the models.) |

Need two votes: "This is ridiculous" and "I disagree." |

What does scale have to do with it? I'd rather just play an interesting game wether with miniatures or not. |

I played Squad Leader, in the mid- to late-70's, along with other Avalon Hill WW II boardgames. Played with a very few 25mm miniatures in the early 80's, getting into D&D. Started playing 6mm and naval WW II miniatures games in the early 90's, as well as 15mm Napoleonics, and 25mm fantasy (my personal favorite). I play boardgames to this day. I love games, period. Style, scale, etc., do not matter to me. It is fun to play with family and friends. The game itself needs to be fun, too. Cheers! |

I agree with SGT Slag! MY adventures in wargaming started with the Avalon Hill bookcase games! |

I may, depending on the particular games involved, prefer to play a boardgame over a minis game, but figure scale is unlikely to have to do with it. |

Another vote for the modality does not matter. A good game is a good game. Board game, minis game, 15mm, 40mm. |

Asking a person who has 3000 6mm Napoleonics this question will give a predictable response! |

Never played many board games, not due necessarily to my choice, nobody ever asked!! My son and his 12 year old daughter (my grand-daughter) like to to play a D & D based boardgame with grandpa, can't for the life of me remember the name just now, that has plastic figures for the counters. I still need to get some of those painted. |
