And now the two I've read turn up! A strong recommendation for Rider on a White Horse. It's historical fiction done right. Military history isn't her strong suit, but her understanding is enough for her purpose. Not so strong for Anderson's Midsummer Tempest. It's decently written--Anderson, after all--and he makes his usual solid effort to understand the motives of both sides. But--apart from being fantasy--I never really believed it. Suffers from what I think of as the Steampunk Fallacy--that you can make major changes to a society and still have derivative things unchanged. You can have railroads in 17th Century England, but not Marston Moor straight out of the history books if you do. Felt more like an ad for his "Olde Pheonix Inn"--a useful conceit which came much too late in Anderson's career to be used properly. But, again, and Poul Anderson is at least worth taking a look. |
