I paint single figure for the same reason as ochoin. And I rarely do that. (Too rarely, I should be better at painting: brigadiers and divisional generals)

I paint single figures some of the time, and it is usually because they are unique/command figures – sometimes it is to test out a paint scheme but usually for command or other such figures

Plus sometimes I paint 54mm single figures – don't game with them, like to look at them

I do like to paint them but haven't in a while.

Often, but I often co-opt them into the assembly process. I will have a few single figures assembled and primed ready to go when I am painting a group of figures using roughly the same color scheme. It's a good way to use up the last little bit of paint on your palette and to get you a good head start on the one-offs.

I do what etotheipi does.
So they stand around waiting a lot.

I will paint a single figure that will never be part of an army just for the fun of it. It is a good break when you have had to paint similar kinds of figures for too long Fantasy figures are great for this kind of break

What Etotheipi & Toronto48 said.

Also, when I haven't painted for a good while, or when I want things painted but can't seem to get motivated by what's on the workbench, I'll pick out some other mini (usually fantasy) that's crying out for some hues. That gets me back into the groove.

I typically paint 15mm armies. I have been painting more singles this summer as I do characters for RPGs (and work through my stash of Bones)

I'm not really wedded to any sort of system so do it whenever I want another specific figure, or to add a personality or 'one off' …
