I have voted 'appropriate variety of shades' but to be honest with my poor painting ability and colour sense we have to include an element of 'inappropriate variety of shades'. x42 |

Varies by unit. If a unit was known to be homogenous then I paint them such. If not or if no information exist then I usually mix them up, Mike |

I use a varied mixture of shades, mostly browns – with two exceptions, the Scots Greys and the Black Horse cavalry |

I generally paint the horses of any unit the same color. Not for historical accuracy so much as a means to keep them straight on the table. Purely game mechanics. |

I sometimes vary the horse color. Other times like when I am in a hurry, they get the same color across the unit. |

Typically a variety, although for some units I opt to suggest that they either pull their horses from the same stock or deliberately choose a specific breed. But even here, I try to vary the appearance of each horse slightly (and that's when painting 10mm, which is proof that I've gone nuts…). |

The Toffs and Swells Regiment oh Horse of course have different colors of horse for each squadron. A week into the war when remounts are needed, that all goes out the window. |

and that's when painting 10mm, which is proof that I've gone nuts… Glad there are nice folks to keep me company in the padded cell. |

There is plenty of variety within the Bays, or Chestnuts themselves. Stockings, blazes and hair are where you can express yourself a bit. I usually make them all some form of brown and then officers and buglers get white and/or gray horses. I don't put black or palominos in with the browns. |
