"The Mote in God's Eye" (with Larry Niven)is one of the best SF novels ever written. Sadly, the sequel was not so good. Pournelle's other stuff is pretty good, too.

Niven & Pournelle was better on average than Niven OR Pournelle, which is a rare accomplishment. I still rate Inferno and Oath of Fealty as the best of a very good bunch, but neither have much to offer the Miniature Wargamer, while Pournelle's CoDominium and Second Empire stories just cry out for wargames.

Years ago I was tinkering together a set of rules for space combat with the Langston field generator, but I never got it to the playtest stage.
