I would like to know more of this rule set but it seems locally people love it or hate it when you bring it up but isn't played at local conventions/shops much that I have seen due to popularity of WW2, Napoleonic era games, and <grrrr> the Evil Empire.

So while I know my favorites from past gaming I don't know how this set of rules would handle historical forces enough to speak from actual experience.

What is Evil Empire (no need to answer if it is not historical – which indeed it might not be)?

FoG-R is a good rules set (I think better than the 2nd ed. of its Ancient/Medieval – AM – stablemate) but Italian Wars to French Wars of Religion would be my preferred period for using it (I'm not sure our historical knowledge is sufficiently deep to understand how well it functions for some of the cultures in Cities of Gold)

No opinion. Not a FoG player…though I may get the computer version. It looks quite nice!

Not a FoG player, though I am interested in the period.
