Again and always, what hobby is "this" one? Ever since someone on TMP proposed we play fewer military games and more "cooperative" one in order to "grow the hobby" and I heard an HMGS member bitterly denounce miniatures games with no fantasy element, I've known that we are not all engaged in the same hobby.

+1 Robert.

Two different hobbies. There is Historical Gaming and then there is Fantasy/Science Fiction gaming.

People who are interested in history.

People that are interested in arguing.

zoneofcontrol22 Jan 2018 8:51 a.m. PST

No it doesn't.

zoneofcontrol22 Jan 2018 8:51 a.m. PST

Yes it does.

So, in answer to the question 'who is attracted to wargaming', one of the potential answers is 'people who like wargaming'.

Someone's got a degree in the bleedin' obvious….

It is all the same hobby but since one of the personality types this hobby attracts is one that argues about everything and also seeks to break things into ironclad categories, I can see where there is confusion.

Hmm. I would say miniature wargames could be considered a hobby with fantasy/SF and historical branches. I could truthfully say that that hobby attracts people with an interest in miniature figures and terrain. But in that case, I'd hesitate to say THAT hobby attracts people with an interest in history.
Or I could say historical wargames are a hobby--throwing out the fantasy and SF crowd, but bringing in the board gamers, so then you'd have board and miniature branches. That hobby is interested in history--but not necessarily in miniatures.
And I have no idea what hobby the guy pushing non-miniature cooperative games was trying to promote. Gaming in general, perhaps? But I'd hate even to call something with no winners a "game." An activity, perhaps?

But even without them, that's really four different activities, and four sets of different answers. And I'm leaving out dioramists.

Anyway, you see the problem. An honest answer to "what sort of people "this hobby" attracts hinges entirely on assumptions about what hobby is under discussion.

Patrick, Bill and I may have very different answers.
