I have a number of the old space Womble type painted up in Government Pattern Tartan so feel justified in saying they are 'inspired by a historical military unit'

29th Recruitment Battalion (Undead).

Once you've got the title and some skulls for heads and shot-up armour, you don't need any more depth than that.

I worked up (I would guess about) a one-page back story for my RT chapter, with fairly detailed patterns & markings for different squads and character types.

I wouldn't call it a "deep background".

The TQM, or Total Quality Marines, have matching neckties by squad. Yep, I don't take it seriously.

There is only one Real Space Marine Chapter and its spinoffs.

Only one

I don't take them too seriously but I do have two Chapters

The first has a deep background but done by someone else – the infamous "Angry Marines" (strong language warning!)

The second is a lot smaller but I am working on it – my own creation including the background – The Emperor's Dominion, based on Canada and its ten provinces

I as well have two Chapters; the one above and this one.

I had 'Wonder Bread" space marines, in white with big colored circles on them. They could have been escaped clowns or pathfinders, but I never settled on one story and subsequently recycled them with and heads and thorax sections to become Ant Men from Space…

Mine are Fleshtearers. I didn't want to just play regular Blood Angels.

My color scheme is based on a sports team.

Trick question, because I have had more than one Space Marine army.
