No "Flames of Liberty"?
Oh wait. I haven't written it yet.

Show me the money… I mean rules…

Get Cracking!

Granted, other than Chainmail (by that I mean the 1970s/1980s rules) Nostalgia is a big factor since they have not seen table time for decades.

"Best" in my book includes criteria such as fun to play, rewards long term repeat play, and and other factors beyond just historical accuracy.

redbanner414509 Oct 2015 6:37 a.m. PST

Most of my favorites, like Battleground WWII, Arc of Fire, Fireball Forward and Napoleons Battles aren't included.

nazrat09 Oct 2015 7:26 a.m. PST

Dang, I missed this pre-poll discussion, so the BEST rules aren't on there. 8)=

1. Fireball Forward
2. Battlegroup
3. Johnny Reb III

Indubitably. Where's 'A Glorious War'?

freerangeegg09 Oct 2015 12:49 p.m. PST

None of these

Grignotage09 Oct 2015 1:10 p.m. PST

I chose other---Check your Six! is my vote.

Jamesonsafari09 Oct 2015 1:21 p.m. PST

I listed some early influences, Grant, Wells, TSATF,
Tricolour because it was my first purchased rule book
F&F because it broke the pattern of B&w, 10 pt Courier typeface and laid out on a typewriter that was the norm and brought rule books into the modern era.

Don't play any of them anymore except the odd game of F&F.

It is only Round 1.

Why do I think this is a popularity contest? To do it right you would have an army of military historians pouring over all these rules. But that wouldn't be any fun.

dandiggler09 Oct 2015 5:17 p.m. PST

Chain of Command, Battlegroup

Well, I'll wait for a next round as by chance all the rules I consider to be the best in their respective fields/eras aren't mentioned (yet?)

Dux Brittaniarum, Chain Of Command, I Ain't Been Shot Mum, Donnybrook, Beneath The Lily Banners and JR III.

jeffreyw310 Oct 2015 8:01 a.m. PST

Haven't played any on that list.

Chain of Command, Bloody Barons, To the Strongest, and Charlie Don't Surf should have been included in the choices.

I like Spearhead but that may be in Rounds II or III
