Yet another P-51 fan here. However I voted for thee P-40. Gotta love those lines and shark teeth!

All of them but the P-40 has a special place for me.

For me it is the P-38.

Some very capable guns on it and the top two American Aces both flew it.

P-51 Mustang

Hard to believe it did not make the final round. There are several aircraft missing that should be there and some that should not be there. The Mustang is arguably the greatest fighter of all time. Mustangs and Corsairs where still in combat during the Korean War.

I do not understand the fascination for the F4U Corsair. A rather ugly aircraft that was involved in the war until late 1944. The Corsair is credited with just over 2,100 enemy aircraft destroyed.

Compared to, say, the Hellcat, which had slightly inferior aircraft characteristics, but was a much better aircraft and much easier to handle by inexperienced crews. Hellcat pilots are credited with over 5,000 enemy aircraft shot down.

My favorite bomber aircraft from WWII is the B-17 so I was very pleased to see that it made it to the final list (where I would have expected only sexy fighter plans to be).

For me it's the look of it. Really cool in the air, on the ground a gooney bird. Plus Pappy Boyington flew it. :)

The British didn't seem to have trouble flying them off carriers. They were doing so way before the Americans were. It is the performance of the Corsair. It outclassed the F6F. By Korea the F6F was done. The Corsair was still flying off carriers and even claimed some jet kills. There is a reason the Corsair stayed in service and the Hellcat was relegated to the trash dumped.

So why no love for the P-51? Wow, the most advanced piston engine fighter ever and doesn't crack the top three. Something is amiss here. These folks think the Mustang was the best fighter plane of all time and I have to agree.
