I like them just fine. I really have no preference though as I grow older I find simplicity works better than complexity for me. Grids simplify things greatly. |

I love the ease of movement that hexes and grids add but they just don't look nice on a table. Mind you, I'm one of those crazies that spend as much time on terrain as I do my figs. |

I was just looking into Peter Pig's rules for the first time, and while it took some getting used to, I am intrigued by the notion. |

Grids make it a board game, IMHO. |

Lost Battles works well with a square grid and it doesn't feel like a board game to me. |

Grids work fine … why the dislike? Lost Battles .. To the Strongest? even Command and Colours But as a friend of mine pointed out, even DBA plays on a grid (just a free-flowing one which each element carries with it … ) … I like all sorts of games and wouldn't dream of pre-judging based on whether it used a grid or not (or what size figures … cards or dominoes … whatever – heck: I'd even use singly based 28mm figures if the game was good enough Lol … ) … Phil |

I wouldn't refuse to play using a grid but I don't like the way they look for ancients. A space game with grids though doesn't bother me for some reason. |

I would play if some one had an open seat at a game, but I wouldn't set one up. To me the look a bit too much like a board game, and while I enjoy playing board games I just like the different feel. |

The first ancient game I played with a grid was Strategos and I enjoyed it. Far more than DBA which I was also learning at the time. Thus the presence of a grid won't make me say 'No' to any ruleset just by being present. For a larger table game of Ancients then I look to more freedom of the no grid (or as Yesthatphil says a personal grid) set up. I haven't played a Peter Pig ancients game but I was properly converted to the idea that they could work well in a miniatures game by PBI and Hammerin Iron from Peter Pig and Bag the Hun by TFL. I suspect that my interest in grids will vary a lot based on the nature of the game scale and physical size as well. So I voted Yes I like them – although I do not consider them universally my preference, nor would I want to see all my rulesets for the same force scale and table size to suddenly become gridded. To me they are another part of the collection of ruleset features that may or may not work when I assess a novel game. |
