Colonel Brighton: He was the most extraordinary man I ever knew. Lawrence of Arabia (1962) – On of my all time favorite movies. Had to vote for it. |

No, 20th Maine, you're just the first person to vote for it. I wrote my closing paper in Film Study on the use of light and shadow in The Third Man. I watched it over and over and over while prepping that paper. As a result, I suspect I've seen it more than any man alive who didn't either work on the film or man the projector in the classic movie theatres. I held my votes to films I could immediately recognize from the line. (I set aside Moby Dick and A Christmas Carol as these quotes brought to mind the novels, not the films). |

Not all these are technically opening lines; 'mostly near the beginning' seems closer to the case. But, yeah, the one I'll chose DOES open. ;->= Doug |

Wow! That must be a labor of love to write all that up. ;-) |

I voted for one line that I have no idea where it is from, have not seen the movie or any book it may be drawn from, simply because it is a terrific first line, in any context, for any work. (It's the one about asking for a mission and receiving one according to sins.) That's scripting! |
