It would (rightly) be illegal to smoke anywhere on or near the premises.

Smoking inside a venue would be illegal in the UK so, when I did smoke, it was outside.

Our gaming group allows smoking though it's generally only an occasional cigar now that most of the original smokers have quit. I can't remember being at a convention that allowed smoking in the gaming area.

Players who smoke slow down games. They are never there when it is their turn. Seem to always be waiting on the them. When the one guy that smoked in our club played at my house he would go outside and afterwards there would cigarette butts all over my yard. Fortunately he got out of the hobby. Now no one in our club smokes. So not an issue anymore. I find most smokers inconsiderate and irritable. Not all but most. I will not attend a con that allows smoking in the game areas.
